April, Business & Retail Manager Rushmore Cave Black Hills South Dakota

Today was one of those days that truly made me stop and realize just how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful area. My commute to Rushmore Cave takes approximately 45 minutes one way. Some people say that they cannot believe that I am willing to drive soo far, others think 45 minutes is nothing if you are navigating congested freeways during rush hour, but South Dakotans know that in those 45 minutes a person is likely to see more wildlife than cars. Today was that day.

I started out with the mandatory herd of bison… a common sighting around here and continued with a few antelope and deer – both Mule and Whitetail. Even a couple of coyotes were wandering around. And of course, Rushmore Cave has our very own gobble of wild turkeys and a bunch of rabbits who are quite kamikaze this year. The Black Hills really start to show off as the season changes into winter.  The elk herds make their way into our neck of the woods and eagles soar high above. It helps make the cold weather and icy roads just a little easier to tolerate. – April
